Allen has been making the unglamorous half of a hunting trip since 1970 — gun cases, blinds, packs, decoy bags and tree-stand harnesses. It is the brand most hunters own several items from without ever having chosen it deliberately, which is a reasonable description of a company that competes on price and availability rather than on prestige.

The range is broadest in soft cases and field storage, where the practical differences are lining material, zip quality and whether there is a lock point. Worth remembering with any soft case: it is transport, not storage. A gun put away damp inside a fleece-lined case stays damp, which on the Gulf Coast is enough to start surface rust.
