Mag Pouches

Carrying a spare magazine is less about running out of ammunition and more about the most common way a semi-automatic stops working. A magazine is the part most likely to fail, and a malfunction caused by a bad magazine is fixed by a different magazine, not by manipulating the gun.

Retention and orientation are the two decisions. Kydex pouches retain by friction and can be adjusted; open-top nylon is faster and less secure. Bullets-forward carry, with the rounds pointing toward your centreline, indexes the magazine correctly in your hand on the draw and is worth learning even if it feels backwards at first.
