Short-Barreled Rifles

A short-barreled rifle is any rifle with a barrel under 16 inches or an overall length under 26 inches, and it is an NFA item requiring ATF approval on a Form 4 before transfer. Since 1 January 2026 the federal tax on that has been $0, though the background check, fingerprints and photographs are unchanged.

The reason to bother is handling. A 10 to 12 inch carbine is dramatically easier to work in confined spaces and to carry in a vehicle, at the cost of velocity and muzzle blast — both of which a suppressor helps with, which is why SBRs and cans are so often bought together. We are a Class 2 SOT and file the paperwork in house, with fingerprinting on site in the same appointment.
