Cleaning Kits

A kit is the sensible purchase for a first gun and a poor one for a fifth. Universal kits include rods and adapters spanning every calibre, which means most of the contents will never be used and the rod is a compromise. Calibre-specific kits cost less and contain only things that fit.

What separates a good kit from a bad one is the rod. A one-piece coated rod flexes less and cannot come apart mid-stroke; a three-piece aluminium rod can unscrew inside the bore and its threaded joints trap grit that then gets dragged across the rifling. If a kit contains a segmented rod, treat the rod as packaging and buy a proper one.
