Lever Action

Lever guns are fast to operate, carry flat against a saddle or a truck seat, and remain legal in several places where a semi-automatic is not. The traditional chamberings — .30-30, .45-70, .357 and .44 Magnum — are all short-range woods cartridges, which suits how these rifles actually get used.

The tube magazine is the design constraint worth understanding. Cartridges sit nose to primer, so pointed spitzer bullets are unsafe in a tube and loads are flat or round-nosed, which limits ballistic performance at distance. Flexible-tipped ammunition solves this for the common lever chamberings. Modern lever rifles increasingly ship with threaded barrels and optic rails, which the older ones did not.
