Dies do the actual work of reloading: resizing the fired case, seating the new bullet, and applying a crimp where the cartridge needs one. They are calibre-specific and the sizing choice matters more than most beginners realise.

Full-length sizing returns the case to factory dimensions and is what you want for semi-automatics and for ammunition that must chamber in more than one rifle. Neck sizing works the case brass less and can improve consistency and case life in a bolt gun fired only in that rifle. Carbide pistol dies remove the need to lubricate cases and are worth the extra cost immediately.
