How to buy a suppressor in Texas

Six steps, one visit, and a wait. Here is the whole process with nothing left out.

Suppressors are legal to own in Texas.

There is no state permit, no registry beyond the federal one, and no special licence. What there is, is a federal transfer process — the National Firearms Act — that adds paperwork and a wait between paying and taking the item home. Everything below is that process.

1. Pick the can, and pick it for the host.

Bore diameter sets the ceiling on what you can run: a .30-caliber can will handle 5.56, a 5.56 can will never handle .308. Mount type decides how fast it comes on and off. Weight decides whether you actually take the rifle out. Sound rating is the number everyone shops on and the one that matters least once you are inside a few decibels of each other.

2. Decide who owns it — you, or a trust.

An individual registration is simpler and now just as fast. A gun trust lets more than one person legally possess the suppressor, which matters if a spouse might be alone with it or if you want it to pass to family without a second transfer. Both file the same Form 4; the trust just has more paperwork attached.

3. Pay for it and start the Form 4.

You pay for the suppressor up front and it stays in our safe until approval. The transfer tax that used to be $200 is $0 — H.R.1 zeroed it out for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs and AOWs effective 1 January 2026. Machine guns and destructive devices are still $200.

4. Fingerprints and photo, in store.

Two FD-258 cards and a passport photo. We take both here — you do not need to visit a police station and you do not need to mail anything. Through our 10Scan partnership the prints are captured digitally and the application is filed electronically end to end. The capture itself happens in person because federal law requires it.

5. Wait.

The ATF has to approve the transfer. eForm 4 approvals have been running dramatically faster than the old paper process, but the honest answer is that the wait moves and nobody — including us — can promise a date. We will tell you what current approvals are running at when you file, and we will call you the day yours clears.

6. Pick it up.

Approval comes back, you come in, you fill out a 4473 like any firearm purchase, and the suppressor goes home with you. Keep a copy of the approved stamp with the can.

Common questions

Do I need a licence to own a suppressor in Texas?

No. Texas has no state suppressor permit. You need to pass the federal transfer process — a Form 4, fingerprints, a photo and an ATF background check — and you need to be legally able to own a firearm.

How much is the tax stamp now?

$0. H.R.1 reduced the NFA transfer and making tax on suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns and AOWs from $200 to $0 effective 1 January 2026. The $200 tax still applies to machine guns and destructive devices.

Can I take the suppressor home the day I buy it?

No. The ATF has to approve the transfer first. The suppressor stays in our safe until your stamp comes back, then you collect it.

Do I have to use a trust?

No. Individual registration is completely valid and is the faster paperwork. A trust is worth considering if you want more than one person to be able to possess the suppressor legally.

What does it cost at HTX Guns?

The suppressor, $0 for the stamp, and $0 for the transfer when you buy the item from us. Fingerprinting is $50. If you bought the suppressor elsewhere and are transferring it in, our NFA transfer fee is $85.
