.300 Blackout exists to solve one problem: getting .30-calibre performance out of an AR-15 with nothing changed but the barrel. It uses standard AR magazines and standard bolts, which is why it took over the suppressed and short-barrel market so quickly.

Its real trick is dual-personality loading. Supersonic 110 to 125 grain loads are a legitimate short-range hunting round out of a 9-inch barrel. Subsonic 190 to 220 grain loads run around 1,050 fps and, behind a suppressor, are about as quiet as a centrefire rifle gets. One safety point that has destroyed rifles: a .300 Blackout round will chamber in a 5.56 barrel. Keep the ammunition physically separated.
