.45 ACP is a large, slow, heavy bullet at low pressure, and that combination gives it two properties people genuinely value: a soft push rather than a sharp snap in recoil, and naturally subsonic velocity in standard loadings. The second is why .45 and suppressors pair so well without needing special ammunition.

The trade is capacity and cost. A double-stack .45 holds roughly two thirds what the same-size 9mm holds, and ammunition runs meaningfully more per round. The 1911 remains the platform most associated with the cartridge and is where most of the aftermarket lives, though modern polymer .45s from Glock, Sig and Smith & Wesson give you the capacity back at some cost in grip circumference.
