7mm Remington Magnum has been the long-range hunting standard since 1962 and holds its position because 7mm bullets have unusually good ballistic coefficients for their weight. It shoots flatter than .30-06 and drifts less in wind than .300 Win Mag while recoiling somewhat less than either at the top end.

That makes it a genuine open-country elk and mule deer cartridge, and it remains one of the most widely stocked magnums in North America. Newer 7mm cartridges — 7mm PRC in particular — beat it on paper with modern case design and faster twists for heavy bullets, but availability at a rural counter still favours the old belted magnum.
